BlackRock, the world’s largest asset manager, told CoinDesk that it plans to offer bitcoin trading services to investors’ customers.BlackRock’s entry into bitcoin territory by offering investment products to customers could be a watershed in digital currency given that the New York-based company manages more than $10 trillion in assets for institutional investors.An official said that more than 1,500 BlackRock institutional customers (including companies and public pensions, donations and foundations, and sovereign wealth funds) can trade Bitcoin through asset managers’ integrated investment software Aladdin.A second person familiar with the matter said BlackRock was interested in “getting full encryption,” and a third party reportedly said there were “about 20” working groups inside BlackRock that evaluate bitcoin and cryptocurrency. “They want to make money from now on by looking at all the flows that everyone else is getting,” he added.Larry Fink, CEO of Black Rock, said in a Reuters report in May last year that he is studying Bitcoin to determine whether asset management companies can provide anti-cyclical profits. The executive also said that cryptocurrency can play a potential role in long-term investment as an asset class similar to gold.According to data submitted to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), asset managers entered Bitcoin investment through derivatives traded on the Chicago Commodity Exchange (CME) in 2021.Last month, BlackRock applied to the SEC to provide exchange trading funds to invest in companies involved in “development, innovation, and utilization of blockchain and cryptographic technologies,” Bloomberg reported.BlackRock also owns a substantial stake in MicroStrategy, the largest corporate owner of MicroStrategy, while CEO Michael Saylor is vocalist Bitcoin Bull.
